Local surveyor shows reporter the lay of the land

When I arrived at work Friday morning, I had no idea that before noon I would use a metal detector, carry a machete and shoot laser beams.
But that’s all in a day’s work for land surveyors such as Dan Barry, who has worked throughout southwestern New York and northwestern Pennsylvania for the past three decades surveying residential properties, subdivisions, construction, farms and the like. Since becoming certified in the field in 1981 and opening his own business in 1986, Barry has gained an enormous amount of experience doing jobs for a countless number of clients.
